Chapter 15: Others

“Do you think they know we’re here?” Jared asked, as he peeked inside the open reinforced steel door, waiting for the others to join him.

“I doubt it,” Tess mumbled distractedly while fingering the brand new rip in her favorite jean jacket. “Damn barbed wire,” she swore before turning her full attention back to Jared’s question. “Hell, I barely know why we’re here.”

“Babe, you okay?”

Before Tess could answer, Eric closed the distance between them and took her arm carefully into his large hand, inspecting it to make sure the barbed wire hadn’t broken her skin. When he was satisfied that she was ok, he took a deep breath to slow his breathing from the quick sprint he ran around the perimeter of the building to make sure no one followed them.

“I thought you said we were going to meet some other Seers here?” Eric asked as he threw his arm around Tess’s shoulder and walked toward Jared. “Where are they?”

“I don’t know. I mean, yeah, I think that’s why we’re here, but who knows. I just couldn’t get this place out of my mind.” Tess looked around with a frown as she tried to pinpoint exactly what it was that drew her there.

“Maybe they’re inside already, but we’re never going to find out if we sit here talking about it,” Jared said, with his foot jammed against the inside of the door.

“Alright, man. You first, since you got your panties all in a bunch,” Eric joked.

Once inside the door, they were completely enclosed by darkness.

“Jared,” Eric whispered, “you got the...”

“Nope...forgot it in the car. I can’t see a thing.”

“No shit, Sherlock. That’s why you were supposed to bring the flashlight.”

They inched along the corridor, trying to feel for a door, the side walls, anything that would let them know where they were going.

As they continued into darkness, Eric could feel his curiosity quickly giving way to caution.

If we’re supposed to be meeting people, where the hell are they?

The fact that Tess was still moving forward beside him kept him calm for another three steps before he felt compelled to voice his concern.

“Look, guys, maybe we should just...”

“Aaaahhhh!”

The sound of Jared’s high-pitched scream froze Eric and Tess in mid-step.

Four seconds went by before Eric could force himself to blink. The effort to completely override his fear took even longer, but once he was sure he could move, he whipped Tess’s body behind him and called out for his friend.

“Jared!”

Nothing but silence echoed back at him.

“Jared! Answer me!” Eric yelled, but there wasn’t even a rustle of sound to orient them in the dark.

Eric slowly began to back out of the corridor even though he knew they would be at a disadvantage. The small backlight from the open door behind them would soon pinpoint their position to whomever or whatever had taken Jared.

“I didn’t see this. I didn’t see this,” Tess whispered in a voice so frightened and small that only Eric could hear it.

“Jared!” Eric tried one last time.

“Don’t move.”

For a second, Tess imagined that the command came from the darkness itself.
